The area

Our favourites in the area

People do not come here just for the beach. Below the hill lies Lake Balaton, and behind it the Káli Basin with its volcanic buttes, ruined churches, markets and wineries. This is our own list: these are the places we love and recommend to you.

01

Révfülöp, our places

Bisztró 71

If you do not feel like cooking, this is the reliable choice in the village. It is usually open outside the beach season too.

Map ↗

Móló Cukrászda (pastry shop)

Near the harbour. A coffee, a cake or an ice cream, and your afternoon stop is sorted.

Map ↗

Lángos by the pier

We think it is the best lángos (fried flatbread) on the north shore. We are not impartial, but do try it.

Map ↗

Fresh Italian pasta at the harbour

A small stall by the pier run by an Italian pasta maker. A good idea if you want to take something home.

Map ↗

Butcher and greengrocer, Füredi út 23.

At the butcher, look for the homemade sausage; at the greengrocer, the fermented cucumbers. We pop in just for these two. Address: Füredi út 23, 8253 Révfülöp.

Map ↗

Fülöp-hegy Millennium lookout tower

A short but steep walk. At the top: the lake and the volcanic buttes all around.

Map ↗

Evening walk on the pier

Walk out to the harbour at sunset and just watch the water. That is all, and yet it is what stays with you.

02

Beaches and the lake

Révfülöp beaches

Choose between Császtai and Szigeti beach for a classic day by the lake.

Map ↗

Pálkövei beach

Smaller and quieter. When the big beaches are crowded, this is the better choice.

Map ↗

Ábrahámhegy beach

In the next village. A different stretch of shore and a different feel, just a short hop away.

Map ↗

Boat trip to the south shore

When the seasonal ferry runs, you can sail across to Fonyód and combine the other shore with lunch or a walk.

Map ↗

Cycling around the lake

Révfülöp is a good starting point. A short ride along the shore is enough, but you can also do a section of the Balaton cycle route.

Káli Basin: villages, ruins, stones

Dörgicse, St Peter church ruin

A medieval church ruin in the village, a quiet stop at the start of the loop.

Map ↗

Alsódörgicse, church ruin

The other ruin in Dörgicse. You can see both on a single outing.

Map ↗

Dörgicse Lavender Garden

Lavender varieties and fragrant gardens. Best when in bloom.

Map ↗

Salföld, Pauline monastery ruin

A medieval ruin hidden in the woods. The walk there is a pleasure too.

Map ↗

Kőtenger stone sea, Szentbékkálla

Rock formations, natural stone shapes and the Kelemen stone. A short walk, a big view.

Map ↗

Vászoly, St James well

A spring and the silence around it. A few minutes, but it stays with you.

Map ↗

Vászoly, watermill

An old watermill by the stream. Check opening times in advance.

Map ↗

Szigliget castle

Walk up to the castle ruin, and the lake and the surrounding hills are right there.

Map ↗

Folly Arboretum, Badacsonyörs

Rare conifers, a well-kept garden, a view of the lake and a winery, all in one place.

Map ↗

Tapolca, Mill Pond

We go for the houses leaning over the water and the little bridges. An easy walk in the town centre.

Map ↗

Tapolca, Lake Cave

Underground passages you explore by boat. One of the safest bets with children.

Map ↗

Hegyestű, Monoszló

A volcano cut in half, with exposed basalt columns. From the top you can see the whole Káli Basin.

Map ↗

Kékkút, Anna spring

The source of Theodora mineral water. A short stop between villages.

Map ↗

Szent György-hegy

Basalt organ pipes, vineyards and the lake. One of the most beautiful hikes in the area.

Map ↗

Köveskál

The culinary heart of the Káli Basin. Village streets, terraces, wineries. This easily turns into a whole afternoon.

A little further

Salföld Farm

Traditional Hungarian farm animals in a rural setting. A sure hit with children.

Map ↗

St Blaise church ruin

A ruined church among the vineyards of the Nivegy Valley. Few people come this way.

Map ↗

Vöröstó Calvary

A quiet village and a lovely view, for those who want to look beyond the usual sights.

Map ↗

Badacsony

Hiking trails, wine cellars and terraces with a view. Enough for a whole day.

05

Market, food, wine, bakery

One of the main draws of the Káli Basin is what you can eat and drink here. Village restaurants, an artisan bakery and wineries, all within a few kilometres.

Liliomkert market, Káptalantóti

A producers' market with cheese, vegetables, bread and handmade goods. Check the market day before you set off.

Map ↗

Káli-kapocs, Mindszentkálla

A relaxed place for a casual lunch or a long summer afternoon.

Map ↗

Bánya Kert, Salföld

Open-air, friendly atmosphere, with seasonal events. Made for summer evenings.

Map ↗

Káli Fecske, Salföld

Good food, cultural events and countryside calm, all at once.

Map ↗

Kinga Kamrája

Local products and producers' specialities. Good for tasting and for taking home.

Map ↗

MonoSlow, Monoszló

An unhurried detour where you sit down for more than just the food.

Map ↗

Pan'ni Artizán, Köveskál

Artisan pastries and breakfast. A good start before an outing.

Map ↗

Kálikövek Winery, Köveskál

Gyuszi Szabó's place, our personal favourite. A glass of wine with small bites, and the afternoon slips away.

Map ↗

Kővirág, Köveskál

A well-known restaurant in the basin, if you want a bigger dining experience.

Some places are seasonal, and opening hours, events and ferry timetables change. A quick check before you set off saves a lot of trouble.
